Roberts earned a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1983 from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana. Roberts noted on the January 14, 2007 edition of Costas on the radio that she had been offered a basketball scholarship to Louisiana State University, but after touring the campus, she found the school too large and impersonal. The only scholarship available to her when she started at the University of Southeast Louisiana was a tennis scholarship. Robin had been promised a journalism scholarship for when she graduated. She continued to develop into the team’s star player and finished her career as the third-leading scorer all-time in women’s basketball.

As a sportscaster and reporter for WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Roberts started her career in 1983. Thereafter, she relocated to WLOX-TV in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1984. Later, she served as a sports reporter and News anchor for WSMV-TV in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1986. Also, Robin worked as a sports reporter and anchor for WAGA-TV in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1988 and 1990. She also held a host position at radio station V-103 while she was in Atlanta.

Robin Roberts Health
Roberts was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in 2007. She underwent surgery on August 3 and by January 2008 had completed eight chemotherapy treatments. In 2012 she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), which is a disease of the bone marrow. She took time off from GMA to undergo a bone marrow transplant and returned home in October 2012.
Further, on February 20, 2013, she returned to the GMA. Roberts received a 2012 Peabody Award for her public engagement about her illness. Roberts said, “I am grateful for my entire family, my longtime girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together,” in a Facebook post at the time that detailed her cancer treatment and recovery. Roberts was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame as a part of the 2016 class. In 2015, Robin was awarded the honorary Harlem Globetrotter title, making her the tenth recipient. In addition, She has been given the 2018 Radio Television Digital News Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
Roberts received the 2018 Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Broadcasters. For their opening match of March 2019, the members of the United States women’s national soccer team each donned a jersey with the name of a woman they were honored on the back; Alyssa Naeher selected Roberts. In April 2022, Roberts marked her 20th anniversary with Good Morning America by throwing an on-air party and having a plaque in Time Square unveiled in her honor.
