Lance is related to the well-known Bonanza character Dan Blocker. Despite never having met him, he claims to have liked watching his reruns! Growing up, Lance loved sports and the weather. After playing football and baseball in high school, he worked for years as an umpire for baseball games and eventually earned his certification to officiate minor league baseball.
After his career as an MLB player didn’t work out, he adjusted and began going door-to-door as a security system salesperson for a small Atlanta company in order to make ends meet. In a matter of years, he rose to the position of National VP of Sales, managing three productive teams responsible for acquisition and sales. Lance went back to the University of Georgia to finish his degree in atmospheric sciences, nevertheless, because his true love was weather.
After seeing one of the well-known meteorologist James Spann’s lectures about helping communities during extreme weather disasters, Lance made the decision to change careers and pursue a career in broadcast television. He embraced the chance to work as an intern with Spann’s ABC 33/40 team in Birmingham, where he honed his skills even more. Lance started his career with Nexstar in Lubbock, Texas, where he worked long hours during the week storm chasing and providing weekend weather reports.
He relocated to Columbus, Mississippi, which is located in the center of Tornado Alley, in an effort to increase his exposure to extreme weather. He was the weather expert on WCBI’s 5, 6, 9, and 10 pm broadcasts throughout the weekdays. Lance became a member of the CBS 17 crew about two years ago, and he has enjoyed living in Raleigh. Outside of work, Lance likes to travel throughout the Triangle and spend time at Falls Lake or jogging along the lovely trails. In addition, he is a fervent supporter of drug treatment programs and mental health advocacy.
