Russ is an American journalist working as an anchor and reporter at WNCN/CBS 17 News in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is happy to return to the Tar Heel State, having grown up in Plymouth. Russ began his broadcasting career as a reporter at WCTI TV 12 and FOX in New Bern NC.  During his time there, he covered Camp Lejeune while based in the Jacksonville bureau. Growing up in Eastern North Carolina, Russ was accustomed to evacuating hurricanes. However, during his first year of work as a reporter, he found himself in the center of four storms that swept through the state.

After that, he worked at WLOS in Asheville for over 13 years. He began at the Waynesville bureau before relocating to Asheville to work as an anchor and reporter. He worked as a reporter and anchor for KOMO-TV in the Pacific Northwest after that. Russ has won ten Emmy Awards and has been nominated twenty-seven times as a writer and reporter. The N.C. Associated Press has awarded him four times. The Mothers Against Drunk Drivers North Carolina Chapter and the Veterans of Foreign Wars have also recognized him.
