Cooper attended the Dalton School, a coeducational private day school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. At the age of 17, after graduating from Dalton a semester early, Cooper traveled across Africa for several months on a “rescue trip”. During the trip he contracted malaria and was hospitalized in Kenya. During his undergraduate studies, Cooper spent two years as an intern at the Central Intelligence Agency and majored in political science. He worked in journalism without formal journalism training. After his first correspondence job in the early 1990s, he took a break from journalism and lived in Vietnam for a year, during which time he studied Vietnamese at the National Vietnamese University in Hanoi. In 2000, he changed careers and became the host of the ABC reality show The Mole:

In 2001, he switched to CNN and commented, “It only lasted two seasons and it happened on 9/11 and I thought I needed to get back on the news.
