After her second press accreditation was revoked, Saberi severed ties with the BBC but continued to present occasional national reports for NPR, IPS, and ABC Radio.

Saberi was held in Iran’s Evin prison for 101 days for espionage in 2009. Thereafter, she wrote a book about the experience Between Two Worlds: My Life and Captivity in Iran.
The Iranian government accused Saberi of espionage on April 8, 2009, which she denied. She was later found guilty and sentenced to eight years in prison. An appeals court downgraded her charge of espionage for possession of classified information, which she also denied, and reduced her sentence from eight years in prison to two years’ probation. Saberi was released on May 11, 2009.
