She is also an investigative reporter and documentary anchor for A&E Networks. Previously, Elizabeth spent 14 years anchoring ABC News specials and the television news magazine 20/20. Before that, she was employed as an anchor at NBC covering NBC Nightly News in New York City.

She is also an investigative reporter and documentary anchor for A&E Networks. She began her broadcasting career in college serving as a student reporter at KOMU-TV and a student editor at KBIA.

Following her graduation, Vargas was employed at the CBS affiliate KTVN in Reno after which she relocated to Phoenix to serve as a main reporter for the ABC network KTVK-TV. After working there for three years, she relocated to Chicago to work at the CBS station WBBM-TV. Senior vice president at ABC, Phyllis McGrady said that Elizabeth was one of the most flexible talents he has ever worked with. She left the station in 1993.

Vargas then joined NBC News in 1993, working as a correspondent for Now with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric. She eventually started working as a correspondent, mostly for Dateline NBC. She also filled in as an anchor for Today and NBC Nightly News on the weekends. After that, Vargas began working on ABC News’ Good Morning America in June 1996, serving as the newsreader and potential “heir apparent” to Joan Lunden. ABC promoted Vargas to prime-time magazine program correspondent in June 1997; Kevin Newman took over as newsreader at that time.

Vargas started working as one of 20/20 Downtown’s anchors in 2002. She was recognized in 2013 with a Peabody Award for her work on ABC News’ 20/20 Hurricane Sandy coverage. Vargas formally left ABC on May 25, 2018. She joined NewsNation Prime as a guest anchor on September 19, 2022, and was there during the week until September 23, 2022. Shortly after, Vargas started hosting a syndicated real crime show called iCrime with Elizabeth Vargas. She currently anchors Elizabeth Vargas Reports on NewsNation.

Vargas battle with alcohol began from anxiety in her childhood after her father joined the Vietnam War. Therefore, her daily panics began and unfortunately was advised to hide her anxiety hence appearing weak, which made problem worse and hence her addiction to alcohol. Later in 2012 during a family vacation Vargas realized she needed help seeking treatment in Utah. However, she departed prematurely leading to a relapsed. In 2013, Vargas restarted but left rehab but maturity although she realized it was a mistake and went back for treatment for a third time. Unfortunately, she and husband Marc Cohn divorced Shortly after she came back home.

Over time she wrote Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction where her book was published by Grand Central Publishing in 2016. It became New York Times and USA Today best-seller and since then she has been completely sober.
