Hughes began her broadcasting career in May 2001 as an Associate producer at WBNS-TV. After that, she moved to WISE in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she worked as an anchor and reporter for two years. In October 2003 she joined KSTU, in Salt Lake City, serving as an anchor and reporter for two years before moving to work in the same capacity at KMSP-TV, Minneapolis in August 2006.

Before joining the News Nation staff, Hughes was an evening news anchor at KCPQ in Seattle. In this capacity, she developed a health franchise focusing on wellness and lifestyle and strategically contributed to the nightly programs’ growth. For a series of stories exposing the challenges families face raising children on the autism spectrum, Hughes and her team were recognized with an Emmy. Additionally, she received recognition as well for her reporting on concussions and traumatic brain injuries that are particular to child sports safety.
