After failing to find a roster spot in the mid-1970s while trying to make an NBA Atlanta Hawks in the mid-1970s, Brown entered the corporate world, working for companies like Xerox and Eastman Kodak. Brown entered sports broadcasting in 1984 when he was offered a job on the Washington Bullets television show as well as an NBA analyst job at CBS, where he worked alongside Frank Glieber. He then held a position as a presenter at WDVM-TV (later WUSA) in Washington, DC, and worked at CBS Sports.
Brown was rehired by CBS Sports in 1, where he worked as a live announcer for NFL Network and college basketball coverage, as well as a reporter for the NBA Finals (games with Tom Heinsohn during the 1990 NBA playoffs) and 1990 National League Championship Series and hosted the afternoon program of the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France and the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.

He appeared in a similar guise in the EA Sports video game NHL ’97, which used full-screen video. His voice appeared on Madden NFL 2001. On August 23, 1997, Brown replaced Chip Caray as studio host for Fox Saturday Baseball.
James worked for an HBO/Showtime pay-per-view boxing match with Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson. After the 2005 NFL season, Brown left Fox to join CBS Sports, citing a desire to stay closer to his Washington home. Brown retired from the CBS college show in 2007 after a year-long stint. However, he still hosts pre-game, halftime, and post-game basketball at CBS Studios in New York while lead host Greg Gumbel is on a mission.
