Before joining Slate, Dickerson covered politics for Time magazine for 12 years and was a White House correspondent for the last four years. Dickerson hosted Face the Nation three times in 2009 and was named political director of CBS News in November 2011 Day. Appears on PBS’ Washington Week and Slate Political Gabfest, a weekly podcast with David Plotz and Emily Bazelon. John is also the host of Whistlestop, Slate’s Presidential History podcast.
Dickerson is the author of the recent book The Hardest Job in the World: The American President. Publishers Weekly described it as “an unbiased and insightful look at the unfolding of the American presidency”. Whistlestop: My Favorite Stories from Presidential Campaign History is another book he authored, and published by Twelve, an imprint of the Hachette Book Group, on August 2, 2016.
In November 2018, during the 2018 midterm elections, John Dickerson shared several instructional videos with Khan Academy. On May 10, 2019, CBS News President Susan Zirinsky said that Dickerson would take over the CBS Evening News for one week (the week beginning May 13, 2019) after then-host Jeff Glor resigned. On September 6, 2020, Dickerson replaced Margaret Brennan on the CBS show Face the Nation.
CIA leak
On 29 January 2007 during the trial of American lawyer Scooter Libby, former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer stated that he’d revealed to John and to the American TV personality and journalist David Gregory on 11 July 2003, that Valerie Plame was an officer of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA); on 17 July 2003, John co-wrote the article ‘A War on Wilson?’ which was published in “Time”, about American diplomat Joseph Wilson IV and his wife Valerie Plame.
The article apparently contributed to the leak of Valerie’s CIA identity to Bush administration officials, however, John has denied knowing about Valerie’s CIA identity at the time when the article was published.
