Price is an American broadcast journalist and newspaper editor/columnist working as a reporter at KGET-TV in Bakersfield, California. Since joining KGET-TV, Robert has been recognized with three Pacific Southwest Emmy Awards and two Edward R. Murrow Awards, one of which is for his ground-breaking five-part documentary on the illegal narcotic fentanyl that aired in 2021. Fentanyl: The Counterfeit Killer aired before the problem was well-known or extensively explored.
Price’s most well-known work is his occasional series Where We Live of profiles of distinctive Kern County individuals and organizations. Along with writing and reporting on many fascinating historical stories and mini-documentaries, he has also won awards for his half-hour specials on the 1952 earthquake and for his thorough and entertaining examination of the fallout shelters from the 1960s that are still in place in people’s yards and basements, often in plain view.
Before joining KGET, Robert was employed in over a dozen capacities at the Bakersfield, California, daily newspaper, including that of Metro Columnist, Executive Editor, Opinion Editor, City and County Government Reporter, Entertainment/Lifestyles Editor, Sports Reporter, Radio Host, and Webcast Host. Additionally, his well-read newspaper column ran three times a week from 1999 to 2008 again from 2016 to 2020.
Robert is the author of the 2019 ARSC-winning book The Bakersfield Sound: How a Generation of Displaced Okies Revolutionized American Music (Berkeley: Heyday Books, 2018). In addition, he is the author of Images of America: Bakersfield (Arcadia Publishing, Mount Pleasant, S.C., 2023). The Associated Press, the California Newspaper Publishers Association, Fresno State University, CSU Bakersfield, Kansas University, University of Oregon, and CSU Bakersfield have all recognized Robert’s achievement in journalism.
Advocacy
Since moving to Kern County, Robert has taken part in a number of community events. One such event was the 75th anniversary celebration of the publication of John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Grapes of Wrath, which was mostly set in Kern County. He has also spoken at several public forums in collaboration with Zocalo Public Square, CalMatters, and other organizations. He’s also written and performed historical character roles for Stories on the Sidewalk, an Arts Council of Kern production.
Robert has served on the advisory boards of several organizations in the past, including the Public History Institute, the Kegley Institute of Ethics at CSUB, the School of Arts and Humanities at CSUB, the Kern County Superintendent of Schools’ Camp KEEP, the Kern County Nut Festival—of which he was a founding conspirator—and the Bakersfield, California, Keep Bakersfield Beautiful advisory board.
Robert came up with the anti-litter tagline “Litter: It’s Beneath Us,” which took home the 2012 Keep America Beautiful national prize for local initiatives. Along with coaching in the American Youth Soccer Organization for 13 seasons, including a Southern California title in 2005, Robert has also taught seminars for the OSHER Lifelong Learning program at CSUB and the Levan Institute programs at Bakersfield College.
