Carter is an American journalist working as a weeknight evening anchor at NBC 17/ WNCN News in Raleigh-Durham. He is a proud Life Member of the National Alumni Association of FAMU. He began his broadcasting career as an anchor and reporter at WFLA-TV News Channel 8 in Tampa, Florida. After that, he joined WVTM-TV as a morning anchor in Birmingham, Alabama. After two years he returned to WFLA-TV where he spent eleven years before making his way to Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Area.
Rod worked as an adjunct communications lecturer at St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh in the fall of 2021. Additionally, he was awarded the Zimmerman School of Advertising and Mass Communications, University of South Florida, Kappa Tau Alpha (KTA) Hall of Fame Award. Rod currently holds the secretary position on the National Association of Black Journalists Executive Board. He is the NABJ 50th Anniversary Committee Chair as well. Rod was the president of the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists and the vice president of broadcast for the Birmingham Association of Black Journalists. He also served as the National Association of Black Journalists Region III Director in the past. He now serves as Vice President of Digital in the Raleigh-Durham Chapter of the NABJ.
Rod mentors and coaches upcoming journalists. He has been teaching broadcasting over an intense weekend course for years as the principal teacher for the NABJ-FAMU Journalism Short Course. Additionally, he has been a member of the Board of Visitors at Florida A&M University School of Journalism for a long time. Apart from being a journalist, Rod is a proud Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Life Member. He is the fraternity’s International Director of Publicity at the moment. He founded the Tampa chapter of Sigma Xi Sigma and served as its previous second vice president. After moving to Raleigh, he joined the fraternity’s Eta Sigma Chapter. He is also a member of the NAACP.
