For example, he had interviewed Senator Barack Obama before his announcement of his candidacy for President. Second, he was the MC for former President Jimmy Carter’s 75th birthday celebration in 1999 and his 95th in 2019 in Americus. Third, he survived and broadcasted from the Loma Prieta earthquake while he was on a World Series assignment for Good Morning America in 1989.

Fourth, he played basketball with the NY Yankees and NY Mets in their spring training camps. Last but not least, he played basketball against the Harlem Globetrotters at Madison Square Garden. These are some of the unforgettable experiences in his career.

Even so, he has experienced alarming moments such as broadcasting, blizzards, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and other natural crises known to man. When he was younger, he loved watching legendary TV journalists such as Walter Cronkite and David Brinkley.

Nonetheless, his journalism career began in 1977 when he worked for the NBC TV affiliate in Richmond where he served the station as a news reporter. The station happened to be just 25 miles away from his childhood home. Besides his general assigned reporting and lighthearted features, his occasional “beat” comprised education, local and state politics, and the federal courts.

When he served as a fill-in for weather for 2 weeks, he went on to become the station’s chief weatherperson. Later, he served the NBC station in Baltimore and WABC-TV in New York. For 9 years, he served as WABC’s first weatherman then he served as a morning show host to the main sportscaster.

Also, he made regular appearances on ABC’s Good Morning America where he acted as a fill-in for weather and did feature reports and interviews. In 1986, he joined Good morning America serving as a full-time weather forecaster, co-host, and feature reporter. Further, he acted as a spokesperson for ABC’s literacy campaign.

Furthermore, he wrote and published a series of children’s books, and hosted “Spencer Christian’s Wine Cellar”, which was telecasted on HGTV and later on the Food Network from 1995 to 2000. In 2018, he issued his memoir dubbed“You Bet Your Life: How I Survived Jim Crow Racism, Hurricane Chasing, and Gambling.” He served in New York for 22 years before joining ABC 7. In his free time, he enjoys watching baseball or just about any sport, visiting wineries, doing community service, and working out at the gym. Also, he really loves spending time with his children and grandsons.
