Peñate works at WFLA as an anchor and also co-anchors the network’s 8:00 p.m. newscasts on Great 38. Previously, she was tenured at KNWA, covering headlines that garnered national attention including the Arkansas River that displaced hundreds, the historic flooding of the chaotic protests surrounding the death of George Floyd, and the assassination of a local police officer. She began her career at KODE in Joplin, Missouri, as a reporter in 2011. There she was accorded various awards for her reporting, and later in 2006 named one of the Most Influential Women by the Joplin Regional Business Journal.
Peñate loves sharing people’s stories and the community which has made her a keynote speaker, an event host, a very active volunteer, and the founder of a nonprofit. Later in 2015, she created Girls Unstoppable to empower young Latinas through a curriculum that focuses on overcoming obstacles, developing confidence, and higher education. She partners with elementary schools to do the lessons in person with the same group of girls for a whole school year; developing a bond that makes each girl feel valued, loved, and supported.
Peñate believes this is key in helping minority youth succeed in their personal lives and in school. She is a proud member of the Gamma Eta Sorority which was founded at the University of Florida and is also a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. During her leisure time, she is an avid hiker, a half-marathon runner, and loves going on adventures with her pup, Tango! Peñate is so excited to get involved with community groups in Tampa, explore the beautiful Florida beaches, and find the best restaurants.
