Ken Rice is an American multi-award-winning journalist currently working at KDKA TV in Journalist Pittsburgh. Rice has been co-anchoring the weeknight editions at 5 for KDKA News since 1995. Additionally, Ken has also anchored News at 11 since 1999 and besides that, he shares hosting duties on the station’s Sunday morning public affairs program The KD/PG Sunday Edition. Ken hosted KDKA’s high school quiz program, Hometown HiQ for its first 11 seasons. Prior t joining the KDKA team, he was a reporter and anchor for WTAE-TV, launching its 5 p.m. newscast and this was alongside Sally Wiggin in 1992. Ken started his career in journalism where as a reporter and anchor on the statewide Wisconsin Public Radio network. At this time, Rice was studying at the University of Wisconsin in Madison but he later moved to television where he was reporting for Madison’s WISC-TV.  Ken anchored WISC-TV evening newscasts after being promoted to the position of the anchor.

Ken has covered Hurricane Hugo and the White House and the inspection of hanging chads in Florida for a disputed presidential election. Further, he successfully covered Super Bowls XXX in Phoenix and XL in Detroit. Moreover, Ken’s reports from the scene of the US Air Flight 427 crash on approach to Pittsburgh In 1994, were carried nationwide by the CBS network and also across Canada on the CBC.

The proud Chicago native kick-started his journalism career while attending the University of Wisconsin. There, he was reporting and anchoring the news on the statewide Wisconsin Public Radio Network. He then moved into television reporting for Madison’s WISC-TV and eventually anchoring its evening newscasts.

Rice is very lucky to be among the few local journalists ever who have reported live on the “CBS Evening News” — during such tense hours following a shooting spree that happened in Pittsburgh’s suburbs in 2000. During his Tenure at KDKA, he has been able to cover live various major breaking stories, like the Quecreek mine rescue in 2002. In 2018, Ken covered the tragedy at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue while in 2009, on the police shootings in Stanton Heights 2009. Therebefore, he had covered the protests at the G-20 Summit

Ken’s honors include local, state, and national journalism awards. Among them is a national first-place Associated Press award after he investigated Harrisburg Paydirt. This exposed Pennsylvania legislators’ lucrative, taxpayer-funded perks. In addition, he received  Golden Quill awards from the Pittsburgh Press Club and thereafter was awarded from the Radio-Television News Directors Association for investigative reporting.

Ken actively participates in the community, and hence taught a TV news reporting course at Point Park University.  Also, motivates students at local schools and community organizations. He is an active member of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society board. Rice has for a long time been serving as Honorary Chair of Pittsburgh’s annual MS Walk.

Ken’s chairing on the advisory board of the volunteer service organization Pittsburgh Cares has been a big success. Also, he is a member of the advisory board of the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council.  Before that, he was a board member of the Southwestern PA Chapter of The American Red Cross. He worked tirelessly on charitable endeavors with institutions like Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, as well as the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Therefore, the Food Bank honored Ken’s contributions with its Hunger Awareness Day Award In 2007.
